. The strike began when Carnegie decided to lock the plants union out of the plant, following a failure to reach a collective bargaining agreement.
. Violence began when the company began to advertise for replacement workers and culminated with the killing of Henry Frick who had been bought in to break up the union and a battle between the strikers and the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.
What were the results of the Homestead Strike?
. The violence broke the Carnegie Union and led to a dramatic decline in its membership, 24,000 in 1891 to 10,000 in 1894 and by 1909 it was down to just 6300.
. Carnegie would remain non - unionised for the next 40 years.
