What were Cesar’s main aims?
. His main aim was to try and get similar working rights for Hispanic farm workers, that Filipino immigrants had achieved.
. This included better working conditions, accommodation and higher wages.
How did Cesar achieve his aims?
. In the early 1970’s the UFW organised strikes and boycotts, including the Salad Bowl Strike which was successful in achieve it higher wages for Hispanic farm workers.
. He also took part in the struggle to limit immigration as he believed it damaged the position of workers born in the US while at the same time exploiting immigrants.
. He undertook fasts to promote non violence and in response to legislation passed in Arizona that prohibited strikes and boycotts by farm workers during harvest time.
. By fasting he was able to secure victory in California in 1975 when the California Agricultural Relations Act established the California Agricultural Relations board to oversee collective bargaining for farm workers.
How can Chavez be considered an important in regards to the history of the Labor movement?
. His Labor movement was keen to attract Hispanic Americans and as a result it helped to enhance Hispanic heritage.
How can Chavez be considered a failure in reference to his Labor Rights activities?
. His final boycott in 1988 over grape workers being exposed to pesticides was a failure and the resultant fast led to the damaging of his health.
. Chavez was involved in a variety of disputes with other union members in the 1970’s which had the effect of weakening the overall position of the UFW.
. It appeared as if he had abandoned his union activities as he became involved with real estate development, which caused an embarrassment as no union worker were employee by him.
