What was the Haymarket affair?
. A strike at the McCormick Harvester Plant in Chicago resulted in violence in which 4 strikes were killed.
. In response the strike group organised a protest march in which a bomb was thrown and 7 policemen were killed.
. Police returned fire and killed a further 4 protestors.
. German immigrants were blamed, and although no evidence was found 8 were arrested and 5 were executed.
What were the results of the Haymarket Affair?
. The violence of the strikers only served to encourage the dislike of Unions.
. It also destroyed the reputation of the KOL and led some unions to break away from it and join the AFL or the Industrial Workers of the World.
