The Holy Scriptures Flashcards

1
Q

Define and distinguish between revelation, INSPIRATION, and illumination.

*ALWAYS ASKED

A

INSPIRATION

God breathed His Word to the authors so we have a book that is coherent, inerrant, and non-contradictory.

2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.

2 Peter 1:20-21
Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Q

Define and distinguish between revelation, inspiration, and ILLUMINATION.

*ALWAYS ASKED

A

ILLUMINATION

The work of the Holy Spirit to assist us in understanding the Word of God which is the revelation.

John 16:13
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

1 Corinthians 2:10-13
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.

Luke 24:45
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures…

Q

SCRIPTURAL INERRANCY:

What does the term Scriptural Inerrancy mean to you?

A

Scripture was without error in the original translation AS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN.

Psalms 12:6
And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times.

Psalms 119:89
Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.

Matthew 5:17-19
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called.

Matthew 24:35
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my word will never pass away.

Q

EXTRA-BIBLICAL REVELATION

What does scripture teach about extra-Biblical, non-canonical revelation?

A

We believe in 66 canonized books of the Bible. The canon is closed.

Deuteronomy 4:2
You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Revelation 22:18-19
I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.

1 Corinthians 14:26-33
Any modern day prophet MUST be tested by the other prophets.

Q

WORD OF GOD and SCRIPTURES

What is the relationship between the Word of God and the Scriptures?

*RARELY ASKED

A

WORD OF GOD can refer to any special revelation: Jesus as word, the spoken word of God, or the written word of God.

*Scripture is not part man’s message and part God’s message. It doesn’t contain God’s word, it IS his word.

John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Matthew 4:4
But he answered, It is written, man shall not live by bread alone…

SCRIPTURE always refers to the written word of God, graphe:

2 Peter 3:16
He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Q

CRITERIA FOR CANON

What criteria was used for determining which books were included/excluded in the canon of scripture?

*ALWAYS ASKED

A

These are the books that were accepted by the Jews, the early Church, and written by apostles or close associates.

The Bible is the authority over the church.

The canon is the canon because it is the canon. - S Andrews

For a book to be in the canon, it must have divine authorship. We can recognize it like a cop recognizes counterfeit currency, but we cannot declare it so. - Grudem p62

Hebrews 1:1-2
indicates that the canon is closed because God now communicates through his Son.
