The Hjulstrom curve Flashcards

1
Q

What does the Hjulstrom curve represent?

A

relationship between river velocity and competence. As well as how the processes of erosion, deposition and transportation vary with river velocity

Q

Critical erosion velocity curve shows what?

A

Minimum velocity needed for the river to pick up and transport particles of different sizes
Higher velocity is needed to erode material, than to just transport it.

Settling velocity curve shows what?

Velocities at which particles of different sizes are despite

Q

Why are sand particles eroded at lower velocities than finer clay and silt particles?

A

silt and clay particles stick together more than sand, so they’re harder to dislodge and require more energy to do so.
