Why do we study history
To learn how people lived before us. To understand the causes and effects of important events. To recognise patterns of change and to avoid mistakes made by our ancestors and appreciate there success and achievements.
What does historical consciousness mean
Being able to place ourselves in past human experience, linking the past, the present and the future.
What does historical repository mean
A place where evidence of the past can be stored and maintained, e.g. artefacts, photographs, documents. Examples include libraries, archives and museums.
What does archive mean
A place that catalogues and stores a collection of written or printed sources, e.g. national archives of Ireland in Dublin.
What does cross-checking mean
Is when more than one source is used to make sure information is correct

Prehistory
The period of time because writing was used, we rely on archaeology for evidence from this period of time
Archaeology
The study if the remains left by people in the past.
Archeologist
Someone who investigates places and objects left by people in the past
What is a primary source
A primary source is a source from the time in question, it is first-hand information directly from the past.
What is secondary information
A secondary source is a source from a later date, after the time in question
