Research archaeology
Sometimes sites are big and obvious e.g. ruins and churches. Even when ruins have virtually disappeared an archeologist can locate them with old maps and documents which can pinpoint there location.
Aerial photographs
Sometimes show up interesting sites that are invisible at ground level
Rescue archaeology
If a new road or building is being build, an excavation might be carried out to make sure no evidence is lost forever
Radiocarbon dating (also called carbon-14 dating)
All living things contain carbon-14 when there alive. When we die the level of carbon-14 in the once-living tissue begins to drop at a steady rate. This means that the older the tissue, the less carbon-14 it contains, how little can tell us how old.
Geophysical survey
Is like an x-ray of the ground: maps and images of any archaeological evidence underground are made without excavation
