Q

What did Archibald Grrod find out?

A

Alcaptonuria - a genetic disorder where it is hard to break down homogenistic acid leading to the urine turning black and future tissue and muscle problems.
the trait is inherited as a recessive gene
Conclusion: normally allele produces an enzyme to break this acid but the alkaptonuric allele produced a defective enzyme
first instance where a mutation is linked to a biochem pathway

Q

What did Franz Moewus conclude after studying genetics of sexuality in unicellular alga?

A

Franz Moewus found that when certain genes in the green algae Chlamydomonas were changed (mutated), the algae couldn’t produce sex hormones. This showed that these genes were responsible for making the chemicals (sex hormones). So, if a gene is changed and the organism can’t make a specific chemical, it implies that the gene controls the production of that chemical. This means genes are like instructions for making the chemicals that the body needs to function.
Basically genes = responsible for producing chemicals

Q

What Beadle and Tatum discover about mutants in the fungus?

A

Each mutant lacked a specific enzyme needed in a biochemical pathway leading to the one gene one enzyme hypothesis

Q

What was talked about in the book what is life?

A
    • studying living matter might reveal unknown laws of physics
  • also it was proposed that genes must be made of 100 to 1000 atoms for stability anymore might allow frequent gene destruction due to thermal disruption of covalent bonds.
Each gene is aperiodic crystal that means that every atom or group of atom on it must have specific place and role
