The Heart (lesson 2) Flashcards
What organ in the body works the hardest and most used?
The heart is the hardest working and most used organ in body.
Each day how much does your heart pump?
Over 6,000 litres
Where is your heart located?
In the thoracic cavity behind your ribcage and sternum (breastbone) and tilts slightly to the left of your midline (centre of your body)
What are the structures and functions of the heart
Structure: Cone-shaped muscle the size of your fist, is surrounded by a fluid-filled sac called pericardium, which prevents over-expansion and it hold it in place
Function: Pump blood, creating pressure to move it through capillary beds in lungs and body
What each layer of the heart do?
Outer layer: Connective tissue lining the outside of the heart
Middle layer: Cardiac muscle which allows the heart to contract, pumping the blood
Inner layer: Connective tissue lining the inside of the heart
How many chambers does the mammal heart have and what separates them? (human)
Have 4 chambers in total
~Two thin-walled upper atria
~Two thick-walled lower ventricles
Separated by the A-V Valves (Atriouventricular valves)
Oxygenated blood
Left side of heart carries oxygenated blood (came from the pulmonary circulation) and pumps it to the systemic circulation
Deoxygenated blood
Right side of heart carried deoxygenated blood (returned from systemic circulation) and it pumps it to the pulmonary circulation to become oxygenated
What type of blood does arteries and veins carry?
Arteries: All arteries carry oxygenated blood except the pulmonary artery
Veins: All veins carry deoxygenated blood except the pulmonary vein
How does deoxygenated blood turn oxygenated
Deoxygenated blood goes through the pulmonary artery to the lungs where it becomes oxygenated blood then goes to the heart through the pulmonary veins
