Q

Is there a difference in pressure in the two sides of the heart?
If so, why?

A

Yes, the right side of the heart has a lower pressure than the left because the high pressure can damage the lungs. The left side has higher pressure than than the right in order to pump blood the body quickly and efficiently.

18
Q

The function of the Bicuspid Valve is ?

A

To prevent blood from flowing back into the left atrium.

19

21
Q

The function of the Pulmonary valve is?

A

To prevent the back flow of blood into the the right ventricle.

22
Q

What is blood pressure?

A

The force exerted on the blood vessels by the blood passing through them.

23
Q

What is Hypertension?

A

When your blood pressure reaches a level of 140mmHg (systolic) and 90mmHg (Diastolic).

24
Q

Describe the Cardiac cycle in five steps.

A
  1. The heart is in joint diastole.
  2. The Sinoatrial node sends an electric impulse to the right atrium.
  3. The signal travels to both atria which then contract and push blood into the ventricles. (atrial systole)
  4. The ventricles contract decreasing their volume of blood and increasing pressure. (ventricular systole)
  5. The blood is pushed through the semilunar valves and out of the heart through the aorta and pulmonary artery.
