The heart Flashcards
Pulmonary Vein
The pulmonary veins are the veins that transfer oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
Pulmonary Artery
The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs.
How does a low iron diet affect your blood?
Without enough iron your body cannot produce enough hemoglobin. So RBC are limited to the amount of oxygen they carry which leads to shortness of breath and feeling tired.
Vein
Blood Vessel that transports blood back to the heart.
Artery
Blood vessel that tranports blood away from the heart.
Left Ventricle
Pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body.
Left Atrium
Receives oxygen-rich blood and pumps it to the left ventricle.
Right ventricle
Pumps blood low in oxygen to the lungs.
Aorta
The aorta is the main artery that carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body. It transports oxygenated blood to the rest of your body and branches off to other arteries at the aortic arch to transport blood around the body.
Vena Cava
A large vein that carries blood to the heart from other areas of the body. It carries deoxygenated blood from the lower half of the body to the right atrium of the heart.
Statins
Statins are drugs that help to lower cholesterol in the blood. They do this by lowering its production in the liver . Statins are prescribed for people with heart disease or who have a high risk of developing it.
Stents
Tiny tube made of Metal Mesh inserted into a blood vessel to widen the lumen. Coronary arteries that are blocked or have become narrow can be stretched open and have a stent inserted to restore and maintain blood flow.
Right Atrium
Receives blood low in oxygen and pumps it to the right ventricle.
Capillaries
Really thin blood vessels responsible for the exchange of substances. E.g: Gases, Nutrients, and Waste Between Blood and Tissue Occurs in the Capillaries.
Lumen
The space in a blood vessel.
