The Heart Flashcards
What is your heart?
Your heart is a muscular organ which pumps blood through the blood vessels of the circulatory system.
How many bpm does your heart do throughout your lifetime?
70 bpm
True or False
Your heart is actually just two pumps. The right side of your heart is one pump and the left side of your heart is another pump.
True
How many chambers does your heart have?
2
What are the upper chambers of the heart called?
Atria (Sing. Atrium)
What do the atria do?
Blood empties into them from veins and when the atria contract they pump blood into the lower chambers.
What are the lower chambers of the heart called?
Ventricles
What do the ventricles do?
They have much more muscular walls. When the ventricles contract they pump blood out into arteries.
What is between each atrium and ventricle?
A valve
What does the valve do?
The valve prevents the blood flowing back into the atrium when the ventricle contracts.
Why do the ventricles have more muscular walls than the atria?
This is because blood is pumped out of the heart at greater pressure from these chambers compared to the atria.
Why does the left ventricle have more muscular wall than the right?
This is because the left ventricle has to pump blood all the way around the body, whereas the right ventricle only has to pump it to the lungs.
When does the heart pump blood?
When it’s muscles contract.
What happens the muscles contract and relax?
Contract- the chamber gets smaller and squeezes the blood out. Relax- it fills up with blood again.
True or false
The 2 sides of the heart work together. The atria contract and relax at the same time. The ventricles contract and relax at the same time.
