The Heart Flashcards
The structure of the heart
The heart is divided into four chambers consisting of two atria and two ventricles; the atria receive blood, while the ventricles pump blood. The right atrium receives blood from the superior and inferior vena cavas and the coronary sinus; blood then moves to the right ventricle where it is pumped to the lungs.
Which blood vessel takes blood away from the heart towards the lungs
The pulmonary arteries pump blood away from the heart to the lungs. They exit so the right ventricle. The pulmonary arteries are the only arteries that carry deoxygenated blood. The pulmonary arteries startsas one artery that branches off the front middle part of the heart, in front of the aorta.
Which valves stop the blood flowing back into the ventricles from the arteries
Deoxygenated blood - 1. Vena cava, 2. Right atrium, 3. Tricuspid valve, 4. Right ventricle, 5. Semilunar valve, 6. Pulmonary artery
Oxygenated blood - 1. Pulmonary vein, 2. Left atrium, 3. Bicuspid valve, 4. Left ventricle, 5. Semilunar valve, 6. Aorta
