the heart Flashcards
parts of the heart
superior and inferior vena cava
right atrium and right ventricle
atrioventricular valves-bicuspid and tricuspid
left atrium and left ventricle
pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein
aorta
semilunar valves-aortic valve and pulmonary valve
septum
role of vena cava
superior- carries blood from top half of body
inferior-carries blood from bottom half of body
pulmonary atery
takes blood from right ventricle to lung
pulmonary vein
carries oxygenated blood from lungs to heart
right and left atrium
thin walled collection chambers
right and left ventricle
allows full separation of oxy and deoxygenated blood
why is left side of the heart thicker
pumps blood to whole body so needs to pump at higher pressure, thick walls can withstand better
valves function
stop backflow of blood
AV valves
connects atria to ventricles
sl valves
connects ventricles to PA/ aorta
coronary arteries
carry blood to the heart and give it its own blood supply
