What is the heart

To the left of the sternum
What is the heart made up of
Made from a special type of special type of muscle called with cardiac muscle
What is the cardiac muscle supplied with
Blood via the coronary arteries
How are diagrams shown of the heart
All diagrams of the heart are shown mirrored image - so right is labelled on the left and vice versa.
What does the septum do
The 2 sides of the heart are divided by the septum, this prevents oxygenated and deoxygenated blood from mixing , improving efficiency
Each side of the heart has 2 chambers
The upper chamber is small and has thin walls- the atrium
The lower chamber is larger and has thicker walls - the ventricles
What is the function of heart valves?
: They ensure blood flows in one direction and prevent backflow.
Where are heart valves located
Between the atria and ventricles, and at points where blood leaves the ventricles
What’s the cause of the sounds in the heart
The closing of the heart valves
What does a pulmonary valve do
It controls blood flow from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery
What does the tricuspid valve do
It controls blood flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle.
What is the role of the aortic valve
It controls blood flow from the left ventricle into the aorta
What does mitral valve do
It controls the blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle
Which blood vessels return blood to the heart
Superior vena cava and inferior vena cava bringing blood to the right atrium.
