What is the heart?
A muscular organ that pumps blood around the body.
Why is the heart known as a double pump?
Blood enters the heart twice for one circuit around the body.
What is the function of the right ventricle?
Right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs where gas exchange takes place.
What is the function of the left ventricle?
Left ventricle pumps blood around the rest of the body.
What is the function of the aorta?
The aorta carries oxygenated away from the left ventricle to the body.
What is the function of the vena cava?
The vena cava carries deoxygenated blood from the body back to the heart.
What is the function of the pulmonary artery?
The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
What is the function of the pulmonary vein?
Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
How is resting heart rate controlled?
By a group of cells known as a pacemaker.
Where is the natural pacemaker found?
In the right atrium.
What are artificial pacemakers?
Electrical devices used to correct irregularities in the heart rate.
