Plant cell organisation Flashcards
Describe the epidermal tissue.
It covers the whole plant.
Covered with a waxy cuticle.
Reduces water loss by evaporation.
Describe the palisade mesophyll tissue.
Has lots of chloroplasts so photosynthesis can happen rapidly.
Describe the spongy mesophyll tissue.
Has lots of air spaces to allow gases to diffuse in and out of cells.
Describe the stomata.
Tiny holes found in leaves which control water loss and gas exchange by opening and closing.
Describe the guard cells.
They open and close the stomata allowing gas exchange and controlling water loss.
When do the guard cells open?
When they have enough water.
Opening causes them to swell.
When do the guard cells close?
When they want to reduce water loss.
Closing causes them to return to a limp state.
