The Heart Flashcards
What is the heart made from?
Cardiac muscle which does not tire like other muscles around the body
The heart is split into how many chambers?
4
What are the two upper chambers of the heart called?
The right atrium and the left atrium
What are the two lower chambers of the heart called?
The right ventricle and the left ventricle
Which ventricle has the thickest muscular wall and why?
The left ventricle because it has to pump blood from the heart to the rest of the body
What is the aorta?
The aorta is the main artery of the body, it leaves the heart from the left ventricle
What is the role of the pulmonary artery?
It carries the deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs
What is the role of the pulmonary vein?
Carries deoxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart
Is the vena cava a vein or an artery?
A vein - the superior vena cava is one of the largest veins in the body
What are the 4 valves in the heart?
- Tricuspid valve
- Bicuspid valve
- Pulmonary valve
- Aortic Valve
Do valves permit blood to flow both ways or one way only?
one way only
What is the tricuspid valve and what does it do?
- the first valve that blood enters, it allows blood to flow only from the right atrium to the right ventricle
- it allows blood to enter the left ventricle from the left atrium
- it prevents the back flow of blood
the first valve that blood encounters as it enters the heart, the tricuspid valve allows blood to flow only from the right atrium to the right ventricle
What does the bicuspid valve do?
Allows blood to flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle
What is the pulmonary valve and what does it do?
It is at the opening from the right ventricle and stops blood going back from the pulmonary artery into the heart
Where is the aortic valve found?
it is found at the exit of the left ventricle where the aorta begins
