Blood Flashcards
What are Erythrocytes?
Red Blood Cells
Why are erythrocytes red?
Because of haemoglobin
What is the role of erythrocytes?
transport oxygen and carbon dioxide within the body
What are some structural factors of erythrocytes?
- bi concave shape
- round
- flattened
- central indentation to maximise the surface area for oxygen
- small and flexible allowing them to enter narrow capillaries
What are leucocytes?
White blood cells
What is the role of Leucocytes?
To defend the body against infections
What is haemoglobin?
A red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood
What are the different types of Leucocytes?
- Lymphocytes
- Neutrophils
- Monocytes
Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cells. What are the two types of Lymphocytes?
B cells and T cells
Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell. Which white blood cell and what are their function?
Lymphocyte.
- They protect the body against bacterial infection
- They are small and fast and are one of the first cell types to travel to the site of infection
What are Monocytes?
The largest type of white blood cells
What is the role of B cells? (type of lymphocyte)
produce antibodies to destroy antigens such as: bacteria, viruses and toxins
Where are red blood cells (erythrocytes) produced?
In the bone marrow
Which component of blood carries glucose, lipids, amino acids, fibrinogen and hormones?
Plasma
What is fibrinogen?
a protein which helps with blood clotting, carried by the plasma
