The Haber Process Flashcards
What is the equation for the Haber process?
N2. +. 3H2.
What is the Haber process?
Named after Fritz Haber
Industrial process - ammonia produced makes fertiliser
Describe the Haber process
Nitrogen taken from air
Hydrogen taken from cracking oil fractions
Reaction converts these to ammonia ( but not all converted)
N2 and H2 not converted are recycled
What industrial conditions are needed to make fertiliser?
Pressure - high (200)
Temperature - 450 degrees C
Catalyst - iron
Describe why Haber process is reversible
High pressure increases percentage yield - forward reaction
High temperature decreases percentage yield - reverse reaction
Lower temperature gives slow reaction rates so high temp used
450 degrees C is optimum temp
Fatalist of iron upset to speed up reaction - keeps costs down
Unused H2 and N2 are recycled
