The 3 Different Rock Types Flashcards
Describe how limestone is formed as a sedimentary rock
Made from seashells
Grey / whit calcium carbonate
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
Layers of sediment laid in lakes or seas
Weight pressing down squeezes out water
Fluid flowing through pores deposit natural cement
Describe equation of thermal decomposition of limestone
Calcium carbonate ~ calcium oxide + carbon dioxide
CaCo3 (s) ~ CaO(s). + CO2(g)
Describe how metamorphic rocks are formed
Action of heat and pressure on sedimentary or igneous rocks over long periods of time - don’t melt
Mineral structure and texture is different but composition the same
How is marble formed?
Is a calcium carbonate
Temperature and pressure breaks down limestone and reforms as small crystals
Harder, more even texture
How are igneous rocks formed?
When magma cools
Different minerals in randomly arranged interlocking crystals - very hard
Example - granite - very hard, used for buildings
