The Growing Environment - WSET DIPLOMA - Unit 1 Flashcards
To Know what is important to the growing environment of the vine
How many are the elements most important which the vine needs to make the process of photosynthesis? What are they?
Four.
- Energy from sunlight
- Water (12 H20)
- Carbon Dioxide (6 CO2)
- Chlorophyll
How many are the elements created through the process of photosynthesis? What are they?
Three.
- Oxigen (6 02)
- Water (6 H20)
- Glucose (C6h2O)
Describe the process of photosynthesis.
The chlorophyll in the leaves need of sunlight to combine water and carbon dioxide to create sucrose which is then transformed in the vine into glucose and fructose.
Where the plant gets water from?
From the soil
Where the plant gets carbon dioxide from?
From the air
What is the basic building block of the vine?
Glucose
What is the glucose formula?
C6H1206
In the plant, what glucose molecules are combined for?
To make large carbohydrates.
Give an example of large carbohydrate what are created into a plant.
Cellulose
Glucose helps to create some products into a grape. Give examples.
- tanins
- acids
- flavour molecules
What are the products that cellulose helps build?
- roots
- trunk
- shoots
- leaves
- fruit
What are the crucial elements which need to be available to the growth and survival of the vine, and its ability to produce grapes?
- sunlight
- water
- carbon dioxide
- nutrients
- temperature
How the temperature can affect the metabolism of the vine?
- Below about 10ºC the vine is dormant.
- Above 10ºC the metabolism of the vine increases rapidly.
- Between 22-25ºC the vine growth typically peak.
- Above 25ºC the vine growth slowly
Why the vine growth slowly if the temperature is above 25ºC?
Because the vine’s metabolic needs increase faster than its ability to photosynthesise sugars.
What are the elements between the crucial to the growth and survival of the vine which can be applied by the vinegrower?
The nutrients
