The Gospel According to Papuans Video Notes Flashcards
The Huli are a tribalgroup that practice horticulturein the stateof Papua, New Guinea. List reasons given by the Huli of Papua, New Guinea as to why they are converting to Christianity.
They want to be sent to heaven. God can forgive them for stealing pigs and sleeping with multiple women.
Assess how Christian rituals blend into Huli ideas about proper rituals. Why does Ghini get upset outside of the church before the baptism?
Monogamy is instituted if they are Christian, but if they are not the men can have multiple wives. They believe one must be baptized to be cleansed. They also perform tribal ritual dances to celebrate Jesus’ birthday. Ghini is upset because Adventists have destroyed their dam. He is also concerned about his asthma. He feels disrespected, because he felt like he should have been the first one into the church for all the work he has done.
Are the Huli free to choose whether or not to convert? Would this be an example of hegemony? Explain.
Not really. The government orders them to follow the Ten Comandments and give up their customs. If they don’t they will be fined.
