Maasai Video Notes Flashcards
Briefly describe the conditions that have challenged the traditional pastoral way of life of the Maasai.
Cattle is no longer econimically benefical as it used to be. Feeling pressure from outside world to adapt to moderninity. Flucutating prices makes it difficult for Maasai to sell in the market.
The Maasai are internal migrants typically within the borders of Tanzania (or Kenya, which is not shown in this video). Describe each young warrior’s views on migration(including homelessness, disease and discrimination)and poverty.
•Ipake, Middle Brother, 19 years old.
•Nene, Youngest Brother, 17 years old.
•Maamudi, Oldest Brother, 29 years old.
Ipake: doesn’t want to depend on cattle entirely. Wants to start a business or get a job, but will always have some cattle. Wants to teach his kids the importance of school.
Nene: Doesn’t like the city. He would rather work on the farm. He doesn’t want to forget the hardships at home.
Maamudi: Went to the city when he was younger, but was made fun of for Maasai clothing. He got modern clothes and became popular, especially with women. Got a series of jobs in the city. Had a child with a girl he met there. Came back home because problems at home got worse, and he was diagnosed with Aids.
How is the change in the Maasai economy and internal migration reshaping the cultural identity of the Maasai?
Some Maasai are embracing outside influence, while others want to retain their own culture. A lot of Maasai seem to stress the importance of not forgetting where you came from, or forgetting the problems at home.
