The Glute Muscles (origin, insertion, innervation, action) Flashcards
What are the superficial muscles of the glute?
glute max, glute medius, glute minimus, TFL.
What is the origin of the glute max?
The ilium, posterior gluteal line, dorsal surface of the sacrum and coccyx, and sacrotuberous ligament
what is the insertion of the gluteus max?
gluteal tuberosity of femur and iliotibial tract
What innervates the gluteus maximus muscle?
Inferior gluteal nerve (L5-S2)
What is the main action of the gluteus maximus?
Extension and external rotation
What is the origin of the gluteus medius?
between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
What is the insertion of the gluteus medius?
lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur
What innervates the gluteus medius?
Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
what is the main action of the gluteus medius?
abducts the femur at the hip joint. It keeps the pelvis level when the ipsilateral limb is weight bearing. The anterior fibers provide internal rotation of the hip.
What is the origin of the TFL
ASIS
what is the insertion of the TFL?
iliotibial tract of fascia lata
what innervates the TFL?
Superior gluteal n. (L4-S1)
what is the main action of the TFL?
THE SAME AS THE GLUT MED AND MIN. abducts the femur at the hip joint. It keeps the pelvis level when the ipsilateral limb is weight-bearing. The anterior fibers provide internal rotation of the hip.
What are the deep muscles of the gluteal region?
piriformis, superior gemellus, obturator internus, obturator externus, inferior gemellus, quadratus femoris
What is the origin of the piriformis?
anterior surface of sacrum between (s1-S4)
