The Global Climate Phenomenon Flashcards
It is a seasonal shift in the direction of the prevailing winds of a region.
Monsoon
What are the 2 kinds of monsoons?
(1) Amihan
(2) Habagat
It usually occurs in the country from late October to March and affects the eastern part of the country, which brings cool dry air that comes from high pressure over Siberia.
Amihan (Northeast Monsoon)
it brings heavy rains that affect the western part of the country from July to September which is usually characterized by a hot and humid weather with heavy rainfall.
Habagat (Southwest Monsoon)
It refers to the gradual increase of the overall temperature of Earth’s atmosphere.
Global Warming
The increase in concentrations of these are primarily caused by the global warming.
Greenhouse gases
It is the natural process when the sun’s energy that reaches Earth’s atmosphere is being absorbed to warm the planet.
Greenhouse effect
What is the most abundant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere?
Water vapor
It is a significant climate phenomena because of its ability to alter or change the atmospheric circulation of the world, affecting temperature anf precipitation.
El Nino southern oscillation (ENSO)
What are the 3 phases of the ENSO cycle?
(1) El Nino
(2) La Nina
(3) Neutral
It refers to the warming of the ocean surface in the central and eastern tropical pacific oceans.
El Nino
It is the Spanish word for “little boy” or the Christ child.
Nino
It is known as the cold phase of ENSO, which is from Spanish and it means “little girl” in English. It also refers to the climate pattern that is characterized by the cooling of the ocean surface.
La Nina
This brings warm moist air and warmer surface waters to the western pacific and keeps the central pacific cool.
Neutral
It refers to the rapid rotating storm formed over tropical oceans.
Tropical Cyclone
It is a type of tropical cyclone that forms over tropical or subtropical waters.
Hurricane
It is a mature tropical cyclone that usually originates in the northwest Pacific.
Typhoon
What are the 3 warning signal devices?
(1) Weather satellite ground receiving station
(2) Weather surveillance radar
(3) Rawinsonde
This is used to monitor, observe, report, and collect atmospheric data for preparations and warnings.
Weather satellite ground receiving station
This is a device that is used to track typhoons and cloud masses at a distance of more or less 400 km.
Weather surveillance radar
It is an electronic device used for measuring wind speed and direction, pressure, temperature, and humidity.
Rawinsonde
They help warn locals about the possible impact and damage a typhoon or tropical cyclone may bring.
Public Storm Warning System (PSWS)
It is described as the change in the average weather patterns that affect Earth’s regional and global climates.
Climate Change
What are the 4 effects of climate change?
(1) Effects on the Environment
(2) Effects on the Economy
(3) Effects on Health
(4) Effects on Society
