The Generator Effect Flashcards
What is the generator effect?
The induction of a potential difference (and current if it is a complete circuit) in the wire which is moving relative to a magnetic field or experiencing a change in magnetic field
Also known as electromagnetic induction
Changes in the size of the induced potential difference
Increasing speed of the movement
Increasing the strength of the magnetic field
Generators
Use the generator effect to induce a current
They rotate the coil in the magnetic field using a split ring commutator (meaning they dint change the direction of the current)
Microphones
Sound waves hit the flexible diaphragm attached to a coil of wire, which causes the coil of wire to move in the magnetic field which generates a current
The movement of the coil depends on the properties of the sound wave (louder sounds makes the diaphragm vibrate more)
The microphone converts the pressure variations into current
