Solar System and Orbits Flashcards
What are planets
Large objects that orbit a star
They have to be large enough to have pulled any nearby objects as satellites
What are dwarf planets
Plant-like objects but do not pull in other objects as satellites
What are moons
Natural satellites
What are artificial satellites
Man-made satellites that orbit plahets
Name the eight planets
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
What happens to cause objects to accelerate (planets)?
A force is acting on the object and is directed towards the centre of the orbit
The force then cause the object to fall towards what it is orbiting and change its direction
What is the orbits size dependant on
The stronger the forces of attraction the faster the orbiting object needs to travel to remain in orbit
What is required for a stable orbit
If the speed of the object changes the size of the object must also change to be bigger
