Magnets Flashcards
What do all magnets have
Two poles and a magnetic field
Where do lines on a magnet drawing go
North to South
The closer that they are the stronger the magnet field
Poles are where the magnet is strongest
Describe what happens when two magnets come into contact with each other
Two identical poles will repel each other and two opposite poles with attract each other
How do compasses work
There is a tiny bar magnet inside the compass, so the compass points in the direction of the magnetic field that it is in (Earth has a magnet field around it from the two poles of the Earth)
Permanent Magnets
Produce their own magnetic field
Induced magnets
Magnetic materials that become magnetic in a magnetic field
The attraction is always attractive (not repelled)
What happens when a current flows through a wire?
A magnetic field is created around the wire
Made up of Concentric circles perpendicular to the wire, with the wire at the centre
What is the right hand rule
Point thumb in direction of the current and the direction of curled fingers is the direction of the magnetic field
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire that increases the strength of a magnetic field
Uses of electromagnets
Can be turned off and on
Used in some cranes to attract and pick up magnetic material to be deposited in a different location
Used to act as switches in circuits
