The Gaseous State Flashcards
1
Q
What are the basic assumptions of an ideal gas?
A
- The volume of the gas particle is negligible in comparison to the volume occupied by the gas.
- The intermolecular forces between the gas particles are negligible.
2
Q
What are the conditions for a gas to approach ideal gas behaviour? Explain.
A
- Low pressure;
particles are far apart, making the volume of the gas particles negligible in comparison with the volume occupied by the gas. - High temperature;
particles would have large kinetic energy to overcome the intermolecular forces of attraction so that it can be considered negligible.
