The Gaseous State Flashcards

1
Q

What are the basic assumptions of an ideal gas?

A
  1. The volume of the gas particle is negligible in comparison to the volume occupied by the gas.
  2. The intermolecular forces between the gas particles are negligible.

Q

What are the conditions for a gas to approach ideal gas behaviour? Explain.

A
  1. Low pressure;
    particles are far apart, making the volume of the gas particles negligible in comparison with the volume occupied by the gas.
  2. High temperature;
    particles would have large kinetic energy to overcome the intermolecular forces of attraction so that it can be considered negligible.
