Chemical Bonding Flashcards
what is an ionic bond?
Electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
what is a metallic bond?
Electrostatic attraction between a lattice of positive ions and delocalised electrons
what is a covalent bond?
Electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and positively charged nuclei
what is a dative bond? (co-ordinate bond)
One atom donates a lone pair of electrons for sharing to another electron deficient atom
what is an instantaneous dipole - induced dipole attraction?
Temporary weak intermolecular forces of attraction between the two molecules with opposite partial charges
what is a permanent dipole - permanent dipole attraction?
Weak intermolecular forces due to the non-symmetrical distribution of electrons within the molecule as the atoms have different electronegativity
what is a hydrogen bond?
Electrostatic force of attraction between a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to a highly electronegative atom (F, O or N) and the lone pair of electrons of another highly electronegative atom (F, O or N)
what is bond energy?
The energy required to break 1 mole of a covalent bond between 2 atoms in the gaseous state
what is bond length?
The distance betweexn the nuclei of the two bonded atoms when their atomic orbitals overlap to form molecular orbitals
