The Gas Laws: temperature Flashcards
What is temperature the measure of?
Temperature is a measure of the degree of hotness of an object
What are the two relevant scales of temperature used in science?
Celsius scale (centigrade scale) and the Kelvin scale (absolute scale)
What did Lord Kelvin propose? (3)
He proposed that the energy of molecules of a gas should reach zero at -273 degrees C.
He proposed that the temp -273 degrees C should be considered the lowest possible temperature (absolute zero).
He set up a new scale of temperature with the zero mark at absolute zero and each degree rise was the same as a degree rise on the celsius scale.
In theory, what would a gas be like when at the zero mark of the kelvin scale?
In theory, at the zero mark of the kelvin scale, a gas would occupy zero volume if it could be cooled indefinitely without becoming a liquid or a solid.
How is temperature converted from the celsius scale to the kelvin scale?
by adding 273
