The Gas Laws: 4. Gay-Lussac's Law of Combining Volumes Flashcards
What did Gay-Lussac study? (2)
He studied reactions between various gases.
He confirmed that when hydrogen reacts with oxygen, two volumes of hydrogen always react with one volume of oxygen to form two volumes of steam.
Define Gay-Lussac’s Law of Combining Volumes
Gay-Lussac’s Law of Combining Volumes states that, in a reaction between gases, the volumes of the reacting gases and the volumes of any gaseous products are in the ratio of small whole numbers provided the volumes are measured at the same temperatures and pressure.
How do nitrogen monoxide and oxygen appear before and after being reacted together?
They are both colourless gases. They react to form a brown gas called nitrogen dioxide.
What should be noted when oxygen and nitrogen monoxide react to form nitrogen dioxide?
It is found to occupy a smaller volume than the combined volume of the two gases
Give the word equation and measurements for the experiment to form nitrogen dioxide
nitrogen monoxide + oxygen = nitrogen dioxide
