What is functionalism?
An approach in sociology; social structures explained by the role they play in society

What do Marxists criticise about the functionalist approach to education?
The system does not teach shared values, but RC values

- Some groups underachieve —> the system is not fair for all
- Gender, ethnicity and social class have influence on performance (not meritocratic)
- Not enough links with work, as the view is too uncritical and traditional
- Existence of division within the education system
- Existence of anti-school subcultures (school does not promote social solidarity)
- It is argued that the system emphasises individual competition rather than a shared set of ideas
What does socialisation mean?
The process of learning how to behave according to the expected norms of your culture
What does value consensus mean?
Shared norms and values in a society of right and wrong
What is the collective conscience?
The shared beliefs and moral attitudes which lead to social order
