Great Compromise
A
One chamber based on population while another based on equal representation. Virginia Plan (called for representation based on proportion of each states revenue to fed govt or population) + New Jersey Plan (Equal representation regardless of population) = Bicameral Legislature

A
- The only way to get the Constitution ratified; Had to make Antifederalists happy
- Rights specified in each of the ten amendments
- ninth amendement: allows new rights to be created
- Bill of Rights only taked about Natl Govt
- 14th amendment says no state shall violate due process clause

Fear of government tyranny
A
- Seperation of Powers: 3 seperate branches; One branch shouldn’t have too much power
- Overlapping powers between branches
- Birth of federalism: Some power for nat’l power and some power for state gov’t
- Republicanism (Article 4, Sec 4): Every state the people can vote for republican form of gov’t
- Limited gov’t

Declaration of Independence
A
- Written by Thomas Jefferson
- Document states a list of grievances that someone has with a country (divorce document)
- Talks about
- Natural Rights
- Social Contract: Concept that we create govt to protect us from other people
- Revolution: If govt isnt doing its job we have right for a new govt
- Consent of the govern: consent of the people shown through voting
- Rule of Law: essentially a gov’t in which every individual must abide by the law; used for created legitimacy
- Excluded women, slaves, newly freed african americans and native americans from equality

Shay’s rebellion
A
- Daniel Shays, a former army captain, led a mob of farmer in rebellion against the gov’t of Massachusetts, which had levied heavy taxes against them
- Wanted to prevent foreclosures on debt ridden land
- State militia dispersed the mob
- State gov’t captured 14 of the rebels
- Later that year a newly elected legislature in Massachusetts granted some of the farmer’s demands.
- Big influence on the Constitutional Convention

A
- First Constitution of the U.S.
- Confederation: all the power lies with the states
- Acted like 13 different countries
- Weak central govt
- Couldn’t tax or order a state to war
- No monitoring or regulation interstate commerce
- Congress couldn’t act on individuals
- No Nat’l Executive
- No Nat’l Judiciary
- No diplomatic prestige
- didn’t obey treaties; other countries didn’t want to do business with U.S.
