The Formation of Fossil Fuels- text book steps Flashcards
Name step one of how fossil fuels are formed.
The remains of plants and animals are deposited underwater, in swamps or along the coast, They begin to decay.
Name step two of how fossil fuels are formed.
Soil and mud are washed into the water. They form layers on top of the plant and animal remains.
Name step three of how fossil fuels are formed.
More layers lead to increased pressure; the increased pressure, over a long time, changes the remains into coal, oil and gas. More layers of soil and mud are added. These new layers increase and add pressure to the layers below.
Over a long time:
– The lower layers of sand and mud are compacted and form sedimentary rock.
– The pressure of layers above changes the remains into fossil fuels.
