Conductors & Insulators Flashcards
What is a conductor?
A substance that can transfer heat energy easily.
What is an insulator?
Substances that do not transfer heat energy easily.
What is conduction?
Conduction is the transfer of heat between solid objects that are in direct physical contact with each other.
In conduction, the heat from energy travels from the source of heat through the object, or from the warmer object to the colder object until they have the same temperature (this is called equilibrium).
Conduction usually takes place in solids.
What are dependent variables?
Factors that change, are observable and measurable.
What are independent variables?
Variable that are kept constant every time the investigation is conducted.
What ability do warm-blooded organisms such as humans have that cold-blooded organisms don’t?
The ability to maintain a constant body temperature.
What happens when our bodies are warmer than our surroundings? What is this called?
When the internal body temperature is much higher than the temperature of the surroundings, heat moves from our bodies to the environment. This is called heat loss.
What do birds, mammals and human have to prevent heat loss?
- birds have feathers
- mammals have fur
- humans wear clothes
The main source of ________ _______ comes from the sun in the form of radiation.
Heat energy
What does efficiency mean?
Being able to do work well with minimum waste.
