The factors that affect the formation of a storm hazard Flashcards
1
Q
The factors that affect the formation of a storm hazard
A
- Ocean
- High sea surface temperature
- Atmosphere instability
- Rotation of the earth
- Uniform wind direction at all levels
2
Q
Ocean
A
- Tropical storms derive their moisture (evaporation)
- Energy (latent heat) from oceans
- Clear links with the water cycle
3
Q
High sea surface temperatures
A
- Sea-surface temp more than 26 = tropical storm
- Formed in low lats during summer - temps are at highest
4
Q
Atmospheric instability
A
- TS - most likely to form in regions of intense atmospheric instability - warm air forced ain air
- ITCZ - 2 limbs of the Hadley cell converge = low pressure on the ground = perfect for TS.
5
Q
Rotation of the earth
A
- Certain amount of spin is needed = TS
- Coriolis effect = increases the further away from equator
6
Q
Uniform wind direction at all levels
A
- Winds from different directions at altitude prevent a tropical storm from attaining height and intensity
7
Q
Thermal equator
A
- Moves with the seasons
8
Q
ITCZ
A
- Belt of low pressure which circles the earth generally around the equator
9
Q
Coriolis force
A
- Moving air deflected to the right in the northern hemisphere
- Left in the southern hemisphere
