How are hurricane measured? Flashcards
1
Q
Saffir-Simpson Scale
A
- 1-5 scale
- Measured the wind speed and storm surge of hurricanes
- Estimates how much damage a storm of a given magnitude will do.
- Category 5 = strongest and cataphoric damage
- Category 1 = weakest and limited damage
2
Q
Tropical storms
A
- Predictable compared to earthquake
- Don’t know size it will develop or what path it will take
3
Q
Hurricane return period
A
- Frequency at which a certain intensity of hurricane can be expected within a given distance of a given location.
- Not precise - no place names + it’s discontinuous
Red = more likely Blue = less likely
