Storm hazards Flashcards
1
Q
Storm hazard
A
- Strong storms
- Torrential rain
- Intense low pressure
2
Q
Troposphere
A
- Layer of turbulent air
- Most of our weather and climate is found
3
Q
Climate
A
Three main components;
- Temperature
- Pressure
- Humidity
4
Q
Temperature
A
- Different temps = different air pressures
- Sun heats surface
- Air is heated below ground and expands
- Warm air = less dense - rises, cools and condenses = clouds and rain
5
Q
Pressure
A
- Different air pressures = global wind patterns
- High to low = wing
- Bigger the difference or closer they are = stronger
Low = rain and wind High = dry and calm Tropical = 980 Hurricanes = 950
6
Q
Humidity
A
- Influences the stability of air masses
- Controls rainfall patterns
- Heat transfer from ground level to atmosphere
Dry air = more stable than moist
- Hurricanes powered by latent heat stored in water vapour - released when water condenses
