The Eye Flashcards
Conjunctiva
Delicate membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the eye’s outer surface; secretes mucus to lubricate the eye
Lacrimal apparatus
Consists of the lacrimal gland and the ducts that drain lacrimal secretions into the nasal cavity
When tears flush, what’s the route they take?
1) across the eyeball into the lacrimal canals
2) into the lacrimal sac
3) into the nasolacrimal duct
4) empties in the nasal cavity
Lysozyme
Enzyme that destroys bacteria
Extrinsic eye muscles
Lateral, medial, superior, inferior rectus, inferior and superior oblique
Inferior oblique
Elevates eye and turns in laterally
Superior oblique
Depresses eye and turns it laterally
Sclera
White of the eye; also called the fibrous tunic; connective tissue
Cornea
Transparent window in which light enters the eye; well equipped with nerve fibers
Choroid
Blood rich tunic that contains a dark pigment which prevents light from scattering in the eye
Ciliary body
Muscle that contains the ciliary zonule ligament that moves the lens
Fovea centralis
Lateral to the blind spot; a tiny pit that contains only cones; area of greatest visual acuity
Vitreous humor
Gel-like substance that keeps the eye from collapsing inward
Canal of schlemm
Allows the aqueous to be reabsorbed into the venous blood
Fundus
Posterior wall of the healthy eye
What happens at the optic chiasma?
Fibers from the medial side of each eye cross over to the opposite side, and the fiber tracts that result are optic tracts
Tarsal glands
Modified oil glands associated with the eyelid edges; produce an oily secretion that lubricates the eye
Presbyopia
Results from decreasing lens elasticity that accompanies age
