The Ear Flashcards
Oval window
Bony wall with two openings
Auditory tube
Runs obliquely downward to link the middle ear cavity with the throat
Perilymph
Plasma like fluid in the bony labyrinth
Endolymph
Thicker fluid in the membranous labyrinth
Vestibular apparatus
Equilibrium receptors of the inner ear
Maculae
In the vestibule; receptors that are essential to static equilibrium; respond to gravity
Otolithic membrane
Membrane hosting maculae and otoliths
Crista ampullaris
Receptor region in the semicircular canal; consists of hair cells with a gel cap called the cupula
Cupula
Gelatinous cap on hair cells in the crista ampullaris
Organ of Corti
Endolymph-containing membranous labyrinth of the cochlea which contains hearing receptors
Basilar membrane
Receives vibrations when the oval window is struck, and the receptors on the membrane are stimulated when the hairs are bent
Tectorial membrane
Lies above the basilar membrane; hair cells are bent in the basilar membrane by this membrane
Mechanoreceptors
Receptors that respond to physical forces of head movements
Presbycusis
Type of sensorineural deafness caused by a deterioration of the organ of Corti in the cochlea
