The Eye Flashcards
How light travels through the eye
Light Cornea Aqueous humour Pupil Lens Vitreous humour Retina Optic nerve Brain
What are the visual pathways to the eye
The left visual field from both eyes is focused onto the right side of the retina
The right visual field from both eyes is focused onto the left side of the retina
Cornea
Is the transparent, curved surface front of the eye, which helps to converge light rays which enters the eye
Aqueous humour
Helps to maintain the shape of the anterior chamber of the eyeball
Ciliary muscle
Holds the lens in places, secrets the aqueous humour and allows the lens to change shape during accomodation
Pupil
The hole in the middle of the iris, where light continue its passage
Iris
Regulates the amount of light that travels through
Lens
Is the transparent, flexible, curved structure. It’s function is to focus Rays onto the retina using its refractive properties
Vitreous humour
Is the transparent, jelly like mass located behind the lens. Helps maintain the shape of the posterior chamber. Acts as suspension for the lens
Retina
Is the layer of sensory neurons, the key structure being photoreceptors, which respond to light. It also passes impulses along the optic nerve
Optic nerve
Sends impulses to the brain for processing
What is the role and structure of the eye
Is the sense organ for vision
This is achieved by the light receiving light that has been reflected or given out by objects
No light, no sight
