Recruitment until 1645
Statute of Winchester remained . Men between 16-60 were forced to serve
These men had to bring their own weapons to battle
The king would setup lieutenants to command their county’s militia
Every couple of years the weapons that these men brought to fight were inspected
Who were Muster masters?
They were professional soldiers that gave orders and inspected weapons however in the 1590s these musters were replaced with inexperienced noblemen who were fed up with taking orders from someone they considered lowly.
What was the new model army
An army raised by parliament. It’s strict nature led to well trained disciplined soldiers. The soldiers were paid well
Recruitment in the new model army
Cavalry
660 were raised from existing forces .
They were thoroughly trained and were disciplined
They received 24 pence a day
They were instrumental on the battle field due to their role in holding a charge to finish an attack
Infantry
14400 raised . Some existing soldiers and others pressed
They were paid 8 pence a day
How did training change ?
New weapons and tactics required discipline . The soldiers had to fight as one . Musketeers were organised in rows so firing could continue despite the incredibly low rate of fire. Also musketeers had to work with the pikeman
