Developements In Weapons Flashcards
Why did muskets begin to replace longbows?
Armor was being introduced that was completely arrow proof but not musket ball proof
The muskets ability to tear through pikemen led to tactics changing and starting to involve muskets more heavily
Growth of towns meant that farming crops was essential meaning workers had less time to train with their bow . Longbows took years to perfect while muskets took a couple of days
Pistols and dragoons
1540s
Flintlock pistols allowed for more maneuverability in the battle field . These pistols were used heavily by the cavalry . Spears and lances had been replaced and cavalry that used these pistols were called dragoons
Flintlock and bayonet
By the 1690s the flintlock mechanism replaced the matchlock . Matchlocks were extremely dangerous. It’s exposed flame meant there was a risk of explosion and it was unreliable to the rain
By the 1660s the plug bayonet had emerged and replaced the pikeman . Converting musketeers into melee fighters if necessary
The cannon
The cannon had become weaker as technology advanced
New methods led to stronger walls
These walls were filled with earth so when met with a cannon ball would not shatter
Walls would be angled to deflect the cannon balls
