The Excretory System Flashcards
What does the excretory system do?
It removes water, urea, carbon dioxide and salts.
How does the urinary system remove waste? (Name 3 things)
1-sweating
2-breathing
3-urinating
What’s another word for the excretory system?
The urinary system.
What is the excretory system responsible for?
Ridding the body of any cellular waste.
What is the purpose for the excretory system?
To filter the blood.
When is the nitrogenous waste produced?
During cellular respiration.
The excretory system creates what after it excretes the nitrogenous waste? (Name 2 things)
1-water
2-carbon dioxide
What is the excretory system responsible for? (Name 4 things)
1-the filtration of the blood
2-the elimination of urea
3-the elimination of any other nitrogenous waste
4-the elimination of extra matter such as salts and water
What are the main parts of the excretory system? (Name 4 things)
1-the kidneys
2-the bladder
3-the urethra
4-the ureters
How many kidneys do we have?
2.
Where are your kidneys?
On the arteries side of your body.
How big are kidneys?
They’re about the size of a computer mouse.
Where does blood enter the kidney?
Through the renal artery.
What are kidneys mostly made up of?
Nephrons.
What are the jobs of the kidneys?
To filter the blood.
What is diffusion?
It’s from high concentration to low concentration.
What does the renal artery do?
It transports blood to the kidney.
What does the renal artery remove from the blood? (Name 2 things)
1-water
2-waste
What does the renal vein do?
It transports blood back to the circulatory system.
What is the bladder?
A sac.
What does the bladder do?
It holds the urine until it’s peed out.
What is the urethra?
The tube that carries the pee out of your body.
What is the ureter?
It’s the tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder. It’s what allows the whole peeing process.
Where are nephrons?
In the cortex/medulla of the kidneys.
What do nephrons do? How?
They remove waste and water from the blood through diffusion.
What do nephrons produce?
Urine.
How many approx nephrons are there in each kidney?
About a million.
What can happen if you don’t pee, breathe, sweat, etc, enough in a day?
It can build up salts crystals in the kidneys,(kidney stones).
What is urine made of? (Name 4 things)
1-water
2-urea
3-Uric acid
4-salts/electrolytes
