The Excretory System Flashcards
1
Q
What do chemical reactions do?
A
- Produce substances which the body needs as well as substances the body must get rid of.
2
Q
What do chemical reactions help the body to do?
A
- Makes the body grow.
- Digests food.
- Circulates substances around the body.
- Uses energy for small movements.
- Feed the nerves and brain.
- Cause respiration- energy.
3
Q
What are the chemical processes that take place in our bodies?
A
- Respiration
- Breaking Down of Absorbed Food Molecules
- Making of Human Biological Molecules (from broken down food molecules that were absorbed).
- Other
4
Q
What is digestion in relation to excretion?
A
- A mechanical process in which undigested food removed is not waste from METABOLIC REACTIONS.
- The undigested food is egested as farces and is not excreted.
5
Q
What are the products you excrete?
A
- Excess water
- Carbon dioxide
- Excess salts
- Urea
6
Q
What is excretion?
A
- The removal of WASTE SUBSTANCES from the body, of products from the body’s’ normal chemical reactions (metabolism).
7
Q
What are the organs of excretion?
A
- SKIN- urea salts
- LUNGS- CO2
- KIDNEY- extra water
- salts
- urea
8
Q
What are the organs of the urinary system?
A
- Kidney
- Ureter
- Bladder
- Urethra
- Renal vein
- Renal artery
9
Q
Where do you lose salts and water?
A
- SWEAT GLANDS remove 600 ml of water (plus salt) from the body each day.
- SURFACE OF LUNGS- 400ml water breathed out in water vapor in air.
- VOMITING results in loss of water and salts= dehydration
- FAECES- 100ml water excreted per day.
- KIDNEYS AND BLADDER is where the largest amount of water is lost (1.5 liters per day)
10
Q
What is evaporated from the lungs?
A
- Water (vapor) is evaporated from the moist surfaces inside the lungs and breathing passages.
- The water produced during respiration is not a harmful product, it is passed into the blood and the excess is removed by the kidneys.
11
Q
What is the function of the lungs?
A
- To release carbon dioxide from the body.
12
Q
What is the excretory product removed by the lungs?
A
- Carbon Dioxide.
13
Q
What is osmosis?
A
- a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one.
- Movement of substances in water.
14
Q
What is Osmoregulation?
A
- The maintenance of constant osmotic pressure in the fluids of an organism by the control of water and salt concentrations.
15
Q
Describe the process which kidneys complete.
A
- The AORTA carries blood FROM the heart down into the two kidneys
- The kidneys REMOVE WASTE AND EXCESS WATER from the blood and send CLEAN BLOOD back to the heart, via the VENA CAVA
- In the kidneys the WASTE AND WATER go down to the BLADDER
- The more liquid you drink, THE MORE WATER IS REMOVED from your blood by the KIDNEYS.
