12
Q

What is the greenhouse effect?

A

The trapping of heat from the sun in the lower atmosphere due to an increase in carbon dioxide, methane and other pollution. This causes global warming and creates climate change.

22
Q

What is a drought?

A

Long period of abnormally low rainfall

23
Q

What is famine?

A

Starvation owing to drastic, far-reaching food shortage

24
Q

What is conservation?

A

Looking after the environment and protecting animals

25
Q

What is an earth summit?

A

The informal name for United Nations conferences on the environment and sustainable development.

26
Q

What is sustainable development?

A

Development which takes into consideration the impact on the natural world for future generations eg. Planting a tree to replace one cut down

27
Q

What is unsustainable development?

A

The lifestyle humans have is unsustainable I.e. We will use up all the resources eg. At current rate of consumption the world will run out of water in 30 years

28
Q

What is the natural world?

A

Another name for the world around us

29
Q

What are natural resources?

A

Resources found in nature/ the world around us eg. Oil, water, coal etc

30
Q

What is a carbon footprint?

A

A way of measuring the damage an individual person or family is damaging the environment

31
Q

What are fossil fuels?

A

Coal, natural gas, oil. Create CO2 and are big contributors to greenhouse gases and global warming

32
Q

Air pollution- cause and effect

A

Cause- emissions from cars, factories eg. Sulphur dioxide/CO2. Effect- causes acid rain- this increases acidity in lakes and rivers, destroys buildings as it dissolves stone, turns soil acid so killing trees. It also increases in smog which causes asthma.

33
Q

Cause and effect of water pollution

A

Cause- oils spills, raw sewage, fertilisers run off fields, rubbish. Effect- oil coats any sea birds, seals and they will die. Coasts get covered in oil. Pesticides and fertilisers and toxic chemicals pollute water and can kill fish and harm human health

34
Q

Cause and effect of land pollution

A

Cause- rubbish and toxic chemicals. Effect- need more natural resources to replace the stuff we aren’t recycling

35
Q

Cause and effect of Loss of natural habitats and deforestation

A

Cause- human need for land to grow crops etc. Effect- deforestation means less absorption of carbon dioxide and less release of oxygen- will increase global warming. Animals and plants go extinct. Human awe and wonder in the world around us drops.

36
Q

Cause and effect of climate change/global warming

A

Cause- too many fossil fuels releasing CO2 are being used up. Effect- ice caps melt, sea levels rise causing flooding (creates refugees, loss of crops and disease). Temperature rises. Encourages people to change their lifestyles and think up new solutions.

37
Q

Cause and effect of unsustainable development

A

Cause- modern lifestyles (too many people, we don’t recycle or reuse etc). Effect- we run out which could lead to wars etc about supplies and lead to increase in price of supplies. People are encouraged to come up with renewable resources.

38
Q

What are Christians key belief about looking after the environment?

A

God created the world and gave humans the job of looking after it (stewards). Christians also take very seriously the idea of caring for other people because Jesus said to ‘love your neighbour as you love yourself’.

39
Q

Give a Christian teaching that supports taking care of the planet, and one that doesn’t.

A

‘The earth is the lords and everything in it’ Psalms

‘To rule over’

40
Q

What happened in the creation of the world- according to Christians

A
Day 1- light from dark
Day 2- sky and sea
Day 3- land and plants
Day 4- sun, moon and stars
Day 5- sea and air creatures
Day 6- land animals and humans
Day 7- God rested
41
Q

What is the Islamic belief on the environment?

A

God appointed them as khalifahs- stewards. The world is loaned from Allah and it needs to be returned in good condition

42
Q

What is the Hindu belief on the environment?

A

The idea of karma- our actions in life will effect the impact of our next life- we need to care for the world

43
