the environment Flashcards
The environment
= the natural world in which people, animals and plants live
What is the greatest environmental threat we face today?
Global warming.
What can the government do to help protect the environment?
Making environmentally friendly changes: the attachments on the milk bottles, plastic straws replaced by biodegradable plastic straws, foster clean commute initiatives…
What can we as individuals do?
The three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Volunteer for cleanups in your community, choose sustainable options, shop wisely, use long-lasting light bulbs, use public transport, use a bicycle …
Environmental issues:
climate change, ozone depletion, intensive farming (pesticides, monoculture), energy, conservation, overpopulation, waste, pollution, nuclear issues, land degradation
Environmentalism
= concerns for environmental conservation and improvement of the health of the environment
How has the world changed in the last 50 years?
Mobile phones, medicine, technology, health, environment (lost species, warmer winters, ice melting), values (materialistic society).
types of pollution?
Light, plastic pollution, air pollution (industries, traffic-emissions), noise pollution (nightlife, construction)
What‘s happening to forests in the world?
Overconsumption of wood; deforestation. It is horrible because we really need trees (they convert CO2 to oxygen and we obviously need oxygen to live). They cut trees for agriculture.
Is nuclear power safe?
The problem is that if something goes wrong the consequences can be horrific.
In what ways can we save water?
Close the water when brushing teeth, not washing your car every week, etc.
Ecology
the relation of plants and living creatures to each other and to their environment
Biodiversity
the existence of a large number of different kinds of animals and plants which make a balanced environment
Ecosystem
all the plants and living creatures in a particular area considered in relation to their physical environment
Habitat
the place where a particular type of animal or plant is normally found
