The Enteric Nervous System Flashcards
What is innervated by ENS?
- GIT (oesophagus to rectum)
- Pancreas and biliary system
2 major plexuses of ganglion cells and fibre bundles and where they are found
- Submucosal plexus (stomach and intestines)
- Myenteric plexus (full length of GIT)
At what layer are the 2 major plexuses found?
- Submucosal under circular muscle
- Myenteric under longitudinal muscle
Types of neurones in ENS
- Afferent neurones (mechanoreceptors and chemoreceptors)
- Interneurones (excitatory and inhibitory)
- Efferent neurones (excitatory and inhibitory)
- Effectors (motor and secretory)
What do enteric reflexes do?
- Motor reflex
- Secretory reflex
- Blood flow
What plexus(es) control(s) motor reflex?
Myenteric
What plexus(es) control(s) secretory reflex?
Submucosal
What plexus(es) control(s) blood flow?
Myenteric and submucosal
ENS-specific diseases/dysfunctions
- Chaga’s disease
- Achalasia (oesophagus nerve damage)
- Hirschsprung’s disease
What causes Chaga’s?
Trypanosome parasite releasing a toxin that leads to neurone death
What causes Hirschsprung’s?
Congenital absence of ENS neurones
Symptoms of Hirschsprung’s and their causes
- Abnormal defaecation (no rectoanal reflex)
- Colitis (peristaltic wave halts)
General neurological conditions affecting enteric nervous system
- Parkinson’s disease
- Peripheral neuropathies
- Myasthenia Gravis
What causes irritable bowel syndrome?
Dysfunctional interaction between CNS and ENS
